Is the Grumpy Mechanic a myth, a stereotype, or is this the image that comes to mind when you think about visiting your local garage or dealership service department?
In fact, I was a Grumpy Mechanic, and I learned many things about the automotive business along the way.But the grumpy days have passed, and I am much wiser for the time I spent fixing cars on a day to day basis.
For the last 20 years I have worked as an Automotive Instructor. I have also worked as a freelance automotive journalist for the Calgary Herald, ATV World, and Canadian Technician (now CARS magazine).
My automotive career has taken me across Canada and into the United States. A few years ago I found myself teaching automotive technology on the other side of the globe in Mozambique! Recently, the Baja peninsula hit my radar, and I again found myself teaching in a developing country.
I’ve been working closely with an organization called Mercy Tech Mission. In Mercy Tech’s own words they are “Fighting poverty by bringing skills training to needy communities in developing countries.”
This type of work appeals to me, so undoubtedly I shall continue down that path.
